Seven energy efficient home projects

We’ve all seen our electricity bills increase in price over the past several years. In fact, a report from the Australian Consumer watchdog found that in the last decade our electricity bills have increased by more than 60 per cent. But what can you do? We’ve collated some big energy efficient home projects you can do to reduce your energy usage and drop your electricity bill.

  1. Invest in insulation

Insulating your ceiling, floors and walls along with air sealing will help keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Increasing your home's insulation is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to reduce your electricity bill.

  1. Think about your windows

Did you know that 10 to 25 per cent of your heating and cooling costs might be flying right out your windows? Windows can let in or leak away up to 40 per cent of your home heating or cooling energy. You can reduce this by up to 80 per cent by choosing energy-efficient windows such as double glazed or window films.

Don't forget window coverings like heavy curtains, pelmets, blinds, external awnings or shutters. Window coverings will both block the outside temperature and stop your house from losing its comfortable but expensive inside temperature.

  1. Don’t forget your doors

Your home’s exterior doors can contribute significantly to air leakage, and can also waste energy through conduction, especially if it's old, uninsulated, improperly installed, and/or improperly air sealed.
